Ingrown hairs are one of the most common concerns after waxing — and one of the most preventable. With the right aftercare routine, most clients can keep their skin smooth and bump-free between appointments. Here's exactly what to do.
Why Do Ingrown Hairs Happen After Waxing?
When hair is removed at the root, the new hair that grows back has to break through the skin's surface. If the skin has too much dead cell buildup, or if the hair curls back instead of growing straight out, it can get trapped beneath the surface and cause an ingrown hair. This is more common in coarse or curly hair, in clients who don't exfoliate, and in areas with tight clothing friction.
The #1 Prevention Tool: Exfoliation
Consistent exfoliation is the single most effective way to prevent ingrown hairs. By regularly removing dead skin cells, you keep the path clear for new hair growth. Here's the protocol we recommend to our clients at Full Circle Beauty:
- Wait 48–72 hours after waxing before starting exfoliation. Freshly waxed skin needs time to recover — exfoliating too soon can cause irritation.
- Exfoliate 2–3 times per week after that initial waiting period. Use a gentle scrub or exfoliating mitt in the shower.
- Use circular motions over waxed areas to lift any trapped hairs and stimulate circulation.
- Stop exfoliating 2–3 days before your next wax appointment to avoid sensitivity.
Best Products for Preventing Ingrown Hairs
Not all exfoliants are created equal. For post-wax skin, look for:
- Chemical exfoliants (AHAs/BHAs): Products with glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or lactic acid dissolve dead skin cells without physical scrubbing. These are especially good for sensitive or darker skin tones prone to hyperpigmentation from irritation.
- Ingrown hair serums: Dedicated serums like PFB Vanish or Fur Ingrown Concentrate are specifically formulated to soften skin and release trapped hairs.
- Fragrance-free moisturizer: Keeping skin hydrated makes it more supple and easier for hair to break through the surface naturally.
Avoid heavy oils or thick lotions on the day of your wax — they create a barrier between skin and wax. But daily moisturizing between appointments is highly beneficial.
What to Wear After Waxing
Tight clothing is one of the most overlooked causes of ingrown hairs, especially after a Brazilian. For the first 24 hours, wear loose-fitting cotton underwear and avoid tight jeans or leggings. The friction from tight clothes can push newly bare skin together and trap emerging hairs.
What If You Already Have an Ingrown Hair?
Don't pick or squeeze. This almost always makes it worse and can cause infection or scarring. Instead:
- Apply a warm compress to soften the area
- Use an ingrown hair serum with salicylic acid to bring the hair to the surface
- If a hair is visibly looped just below the surface, a clean pair of tweezers can gently release it — but only if it's close to the surface and you can do so without breaking skin
- For persistent or infected ingrown hairs, see a dermatologist
The Role of Regular Waxing
One of the best long-term strategies for reducing ingrown hairs is simply to wax consistently. Over time, regular waxing weakens the hair follicle and produces thinner, finer regrowth that breaks through the skin more easily. Many clients who wax every 4 weeks find their ingrown hair issues largely disappear within a few months.
Shaving, on the other hand, creates a blunt, sharp edge on the hair — making it much more likely to curl back and become ingrown. Switching from shaving to waxing is often the biggest improvement clients notice.
Come In Ready: Pre-Wax Skin Prep
Beyond aftercare, your pre-wax routine matters too. Exfoliate 24–48 hours before your appointment (not the day of), keep skin hydrated in the days leading up to your wax, and avoid tanning or sun exposure right before your appointment.
